Crist Champions the Hiring of Veteran Health Heroes

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D- St. Petersburg) released this statement following passage of S. 894, the Hire Veteran Health Heroes Act, legislation that would require the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense to identify and refer interested members of the Armed Forces with health care experience for open positions at the VA.

“Our veterans deserve our full support as they enter civilian life, both in helping them secure good-paying jobs and by recruiting the best we can find to treat our veterans and their families at the VA,” said Rep. Crist. “If we have qualified health professionals in our Armed Forces who are separating, we should be doing all we can to connect them with work taking care of our veterans as civilians. This is particularly important for specialties where the VA has a shortage. Getting health professionals with experience working with the military community into positions were they can help treat former service members is a win-win.”

Crist is a vocal advocate for the benefits of hiring health professionals who understand the personal experiences of the patients they treat. This includes securing language in the FY22 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs appropriations bill that would require the VA to report their hiring of women health providers. As more and more women veterans get care at the VA, they deserve to get care from health professionals with whom they feel most comfortable.
