Crist Statement on Republican Iron Dome Delay

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D- St. Petersburg) released this statement after a Republican Senator delayed $1 billion in supplemental funding to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome, an air defense system used to counter rocket and mortar attacks. Iron Dome successfully intercepted over 90% of the 4,400 rockets launched towards Israeli civilians by the terrorist group Hamas in May this year. The delay follows the Republican Leader equating delayed funding with capitulating to antisemitism, and a House Republican statement that a delay “[chooses] radical Islamic terrorists over our ally Israel.”

“Israel is our friend and ally, and the Iron Dome is a critical defensive tool to protect Israel and its people. As we saw earlier this year, Iron Dome is extremely important for defending against terrorist attacks targeting civilians,” said Rep. Crist. “As an appropriator, I was proud to help secure a one billion dollar supplemental to replenish the Iron Dome that overwhelmingly passed the House. For Republicans in Congress now to allow one of their Senators to indefinitely delay this desperately needed funding is outrageous and hypocritical. Congressional Republicans would do well to remember that words without deeds are meaningless. Enough of the games and the politics with the safety and security of the Israeli people. Republicans in the Senate need to put their money where their mouths are and get this Iron Dome funding done.”

In September, Congressman Crist voted to replenish funding for Israel’s Iron Dome.
