CRIST: THE TIME TO ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE WAS YESTERDAY

U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) took to the House floor today to voice his support for H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, written by dear friend and Chairwoman of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis Kathy Castor.  As a Floridian and a member on the Subcommittee on Environment under the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Crist urged his colleagues to pass this historic bill which would require the President to keep the United States in the Paris Climate Accord and develop and adhere to a plan for our country to meet its commitments under the Agreement. Statement of the Honorable Charlie Crist on the Climate Action Now Act

Thank you, Mr. Chairman and thank you Chairman Engel for yielding time.

I rise in strong support of the Climate Action Now Act, written by my dear friend, the Chairwoman of the Climate Change Committee Kathy Castor.

We are both blessed to represent the Tampa Bay region, which is the most economically vulnerable to climate change in the world.

For people back home, this isn’t partisan.  It’s real.  It’s happening.  And it threatens our environment, quality of life, and our economy.

I know there are friends and colleagues on the other side of the aisle struggling with this issue, and I want to offer encouragement.

Do not wait for the next thousand-year flood to hit your district, or the next freak Category 5 hurricane that explodes over warming seas right before landfall.

Do not wait for the next drought-fueled firestorm to destroy one of your towns, or for rising sea levels to flood the streets when it rains during high tide like it does in parts of my district.

The time to act is yesterday.
